More Reasons to be Lucky

When I was writing my last blog post, I was planning on braving the cold. I was going to go to the grocery store, but the more I thought about it as I wrote it and afterwards, too, I talked myself out of going.

It didn’t get much warmer today and after looking at the weather forecast online, I made the choice to wait it out for as long as I can. Lucky for me, last week when I went grocery shopping, I bought enough to last a couple of weeks. And what I was going to buy today can wait until next month.

A lot of times when I go for a walk, whether it’s to go to the store or to the church for bread or the other church that has the food pantry, I use it has a meditation walk. What I mean by that is I either concentrate on my breathing which stops the random thoughts, or I pay attention to nature.

I enjoy watching the squirrels run up & down, and around the trees, chasing each other or hiding from me. With a click of the tongue one may stop and stare at me and sometimes even creep a little closer to me. Maybe hoping I have something for them to eat.

I’ve been really lucky this season, though. I haven’t had to go to the food pantries since it got cold and I still see squirrels playing in mine or a neighbor’s yard without leaving the house. All I have to do is look out my living room window or the screen door.

When I’m in the store I may not meditate but sometimes, more often than not, I think about my spirituality. I haven’t been doing this for a long time, maybe off and on for a couple of years. I seem to become more and more thankful as time moves forward. The more thankful I am, the more I receive.

When I get to the cash register I try to pay attention to the barcode scanner action and the numbers registering on the cash register. Sometimes the cashier swipes the item more than once and I just want to make sure I’m not being charged extra. Once again, I’m lucky in that department. It’s only happened a couple of times and the cashiers have been very kind and have apologized, taking responsibility for their error. I love when that happens because it gives me a really good reason to praise them for a job well done. I love finding more reasons to be lucky. By the way. Another word for lucky is ‘blessed’.:)
